Keeping students safer online

7 May 2015

Primary school children can access a new interactive cyber safety program to keep them safer online after a launch today as part of Privacy Awareness Week (3-9 May).

Online Safety, It Starts With You! is a free course for primary schools to help teach students from Year 1 to 6 how to be safe online.

Developed using cyber safety resources from the Australian Federal Police and leading insights from ICT education experts and Disney, the program will help teachers introduce cyber safety into Australian schools.

The Commonwealth Government is boosting efforts to combat online child exploitation, target those abusing our children, and teach our children how to be safe online.

Considering 95 per cent of young Australians - as young as eight years of age - use the internet daily, we must do what we can to ensure our children are free from the risks of the online world.

The course provides students with the opportunity to practice online safety with the guidance of a trusted adult, which is vital in today's digital generation.

The partnership with Disney for this course has helped to create an innovative and exciting way to educate children about the dangers which exist online, and raises awareness of issues such as cyber bullying, privacy and talking to people they don't know.

The Australian Federal Police has also partnered with Microsoft, Datacom and more recently the Commonwealth Bank, as well as state and territory police agencies, to also deliver the ThinkUKnow cyber safety program which educations parents and children about how to identify and avoid online dangers.

Our police know too well that predators prey on vulnerable children, grooming them online in a hope to meet them in the physical 'real' world, and sadly we're seeing an increase number of children being bullied online.

The Coalition Government is committed to pursuing ongoing joint arrangements to ensure wherever possible, children are protected from the dangers of the online environment, and perpetrators are prosecuted.
