Alleged corruption in the building industry

28 January 2013

The reports today of alleged corruption within the building industry reinforces that no industry sector is immune to the risk of infiltration from organised crime, Minister for Justice, Michael Keenan said.

The Australian Crime Commission is currently working with Victoria Police, NSW Police and the NSW Crime Commission to investigate organised crime links in the building and construction industry.

"The Coalition Government will continue to work cooperatively with our State and Territory colleagues to combat organised crime across a wide variety of industries in Australia," Minister Keenan said.

"These allegations highlight the need for the re-establishment of the Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC) to provide a strong, independent watchdog for the industry.

"If Labor and the Greens are serious about tackling organised crime in Australia then they will support the Government's legislation to reinstate the ABCC.

"As these investigations are ongoing, I am unable to provide any further details for operational reasons," Minister Keenan said.
